New Variations in web addresses: WebGo

Broadway, Sydney - The internet could be set for one of the biggest shake-ups in its brief history if the web’s regulator votes this week, as expected, to allow new domain names such as .city or .blog

The vote by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which began its annual general meeting in Paris on Monday, would open up millions of new variations for web addresses.

The excellent news was announced today at the ICANN conference in Paris, it is welcome news to WebGo - A leading Australian provider of web hosting, network logistics, and allocation of domain names.

WebGo will continue to provide free domain names and could potentially in the future look towards issuing a free .yourcompanyname domain name to any business or individual.

“This is an exciting development for all stakeholders in the internet related industry,” said WebGo CEO, Jimmy Rowe.

“Apart from the .com, .net or .org, the 1.3 billion web users will be able from early next year to acquire generic addresses by lodging common words such as .love, .hate or .city or proper names,” ICANN president Paul Twomey told French newspaper Les Echos.

With the stock of available web addresses under the current IPv4 protocol set to run out by 2011, ICANN has been under pressure to find a solution for burgeoning demand.

Whilst it’s still early days, and the costs associated with the setup of such a system to handle the numerous requests hasn’t been established, WebGo is not afraid to look at the potential benefits to businesses.

“If there’s some kind of way we can start processing orders from as early as next year, then we will certainly be standing ready to assist anyone who might feel obliged to share in this groundbreaking new technology.” Mr Rowe, CEO of WebGo told reporters in Sydney earlier today.

Websites are now largely limited to domains that end in .com or .country, but the ICANN proposal would enable firms to buy new generic domains ending in whatever they want.

WebGo will stand up to the test and share the experience of establishing your own TLD or .yourcompanyname by registering with the ICANN its interest in acquiring the name. .webgo

ICANN’s 32nd international public meeting this week gathers more than 1,500 delegates from dozens of countries, backing a new address system, IPv6, which would add billions of new internet addresses.

A non-profit organisation based in southern California, ICANN oversees the assignment of domain names and internet protocol addresses that help computers communicate.
