Australians everywhere have been buying up and registering domain names in record numbers, ever since the Covid 19 crisis has hit, causing many to ask the question during the domain name registration process - what about those other domain names TLD's that come up in my search (like .sydney, .melbourne, .shop etc), are these really important to my online success? The question is an interesting one as there have been differing opinions when it comes to this question.
They key point to remember when registering a domain name is the following - relevance. Is it relevant to my online success, and how do I achieve that success? By following the following principles, you can better decide whether or not to register different domain names.
- Is it going to help me to be found better on search engines? (by registering domain names that have place names in their suffix or TLD).
- Is there a product or service that I offer that relates to a TLD (i.e. the suffix .gardening if I offer gardening services)
- Will it help avoid ambiguity when people are typing in my address, and are there times when my brand name may be confused when I give out my address (i.e. I have a domain name that is hyphenated words, are people likely to be confused by this, and should I register a domain that has no hyphens)
- If my first choice of domain isn't available, is my second choice widely understood by people who might only be aware that .com and .com.au, .net.au, and .org.au domains exist?)
- How easy is my domain name to remember? If I register a domain name (i.e. JohnsProfessionalSoccerAcademy.com.au, will this be an easy domain to remember? And could I perhaps shorten it - JohnsProSoccer.com.au, or perhaps register an acronym instead like JPSA.com.au).
If you remember these core principles when registering domains for your business, hobby, or otherwise you are sure to have a place, your own domain on the internet to call home. Enabling you and your customers, readers, and viewers to better engage with you and the services you offer.
